Notetaker Assistance

There are several reasons why a student might need a notetaker. Students with certain mobility impairments, for example, may have trouble physically writing. The student with a learning disability may struggle with organizing the professor's lecture information. Notetakers enable these students the same advantages as other students in their classes.

How do I get a notetaker?

  • As soon as classes begin, bring your class schedule to Adaptive Educational Services.
  • If approved for notetaking services, we'll provide you with a form called the Notetaking Agreement, which is basically a "contract" that makes the notetaking process more "formal".
  • It's your responsibility to find your notetaker. Basically, find another student in your class that's willing to provide you with copies of his/her notes. A couple things to keep in mind:
    • The notetaker is your connection to good or bad notes. Pick wisely!
    • If there's a problem with the notes you're being provided or if your notetaker isn't working out, don't continue to work with that person. Find another notetaker. If you need assistance, contact the professor or AES for help.
  • Notetaking can be a paid service. Many times, students will voluntarily provide a copy of their notes to you . But, if your notetaker(s) would like to be compensated, we can pay them to provide copies of their notes to you. The pay scale is as follows:
    • $25.00 from the first week of class to mid-terms
    • $25.00 from mid-terms through final exams

If you need to, ask your instructor if they will make a brief general announcement to the class asking if someone is interested in being a notetaker for a classmate. If someone is interested, you should meet with them right after class. For your benefit, choose a person that attends class regularly, takes good notes, and has legible handwriting skills.

Your note taker can either volunteer to provides notes for free or our office can compensate them by paying them $50.00 for the entire semester.

Once you have selected your notetaker, have him/her sign the Notetaking Financial Agreement and return that to our office in Cavanaugh Hall.

  1. Will Adaptive Services copy my notes free of charge?

Adaptive Services will provide you use of the copier in their office free of charge. To help cover costs, however, we ask clients to pay $3.00 per semester per 500 sheets of copy paper. AES clients will be given a copier code that they may use to make copies.

  2. How do I get copies from my notetaker?

You must make your own arrangements with your notetaker to make copies of class notes. Contact an AES representative if you need help identifying a notetaker. Generally, our office does not "hold" notes. However, we can provide notetakers a place to leave copies for AES clients.

  3. Do I have to make copies of the notes at AES?

You can make copies of class notes anywhere you find an available copy machine. For classes that are far from our office, students should find the nearest copier. Sometimes, this may mean that you'll need to ask a nearby department or office if you may use their copier to make class notes. Please Note: the department or office may ask that you pay for copies that you make.

  4. I'm a notetaker...What if I take notes on my laptop? How do I make copies for the AES client?

There may be a few different ways to make copies from a laptop. You could try the following:

    • The AES client could provide you with a floppy (3.5 inch) diskette, and you can save a copy of the notes to that diskette. The AES client could then print off notes at their discretion.
    • Many computers on campus are equipped to accept a USB cable. You may be able to print notes using a campus printer with a direct USB connection, or you may need to transfer the notes to another computer and print using that computer's print function.
    • You may also be able to save your notes and attach those to an email. You could then send the email to the AES client and they could print that at their discretion.

Earn $$ Sharing Notes

Notetakers are paid $50.00 per semester and $25.00 per summer session. This amount is divided into two payments of $25.00 each during the academic year and one payment during the summer.

Signed invoices are due in the Adaptive Services office (CA 001E) one week prior to midterms and finals, and one week prior to the end of each summer session.

Payments are made to notetakers approximately two weeks after submitting invoices. Because the checks are mailed to you, it is important you make sure the address and social security number are filled out correctly on the Notetaking Financial Agreement.
