Theoretical Orientation:
Julie uses the foundation of a person centered perspective in her work with clients. This means she focuses on listening and seeking to understand the experiences of each person and works to develop a relationship where the client feels safe, respected, and valued. From this foundation, Julie works collaboratively with each person to identify desired changes and ways those changes can be realized.

Julie incorporates a combination of psychodynamic, cognitive, feminist, and developmental theories to understand the path of the individual client. She also incorporates the social, cultural, and personal values of the client, so that any changes the individual chooses to make are consistent with their identity.

Professional Interests:
Julie's counseling interests include working with individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, and post-trauma symptoms. She particularly enjoys being at IUPUI due to the opportunity to work with such a diverse student population and engage cross-culturally. As a former Training Director, Julie continues to enjoy supervising counselors in training and giving back to the profession. More recently, she has become involved in working at the campus-wide level to help faculty, staff, and students to identify individuals in distress and provide appropriate intervention and referrals.

Theoretical Orientation:
Ciara utilizes an integrative approach, incorporating elements of Client-Centered Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy in her work with clients.

Professional Interests:
Ciara considers herself a generalist with additional interests in ADHD/LD assessment, autism spectrum disorders, mood disorders, relationship concerns, men's issues, and supervision and training.



Luana Nan, Ph.D.

Luana typically works from an integrative perspective, incorporating contemporary psychodynamic, interpersonal and existential elements, within a multicultural framework.

Professional Interests:
Luana's areas of interest include, but are not limited to: abuse and trauma, relationship issues, grief, spirituality, mindfulness, identity development, gender issues, multicultural issues, international student wellness. On a personal note, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, quiet moments in the middle of nature, reading, and mostly any form of art.

Theoretical Orientation:
A Certified Imago Therapist, Misty is trained in specialized techniques to transform couples' relationships. Her approach to individual therapy is informed by interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral approaches and is integrative in nature to meet the needs of clients and pursue second-order change.

Professional Interests:
Misty has experience working in such settings as university counseling centers, community mental health clinics, a chemical dependency treatment center, and private practice. She is a generalist with experience providing psychotherapy for individuals, couples, and families and has conducted psychological and psychoeducational evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults with diverse backgrounds. Other special interests and training include treatment related to self-harming behavior, psychoeducational assessment, multicultural issues, and clinical training. She is currently serving as President-Elect of the Indiana Psychological Association.



Michael C. Hines, Psy.D.

Theoretical Orientation:
Mike approaches therapy from a holistic framework that incorporates person-centered, interpersonal, cognitive-behavioral, and psychodynamic approaches.

Professional Interests:
Mike considers himself to be a generalist and has experience working with a wide range of psychological concerns. Areas of special interest include multiculturalism, group psychotherapy, depression, anxiety, trauma, family of origin issues, and identity development.



Becca Stempel, Psy.D.

Becca's work is eclectic, combining theory and techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Client Centered Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy.

Professional Interests:
Becca considers herself to be a generalist. Some common presenting issues with which she has worked include: depression, anxiety, stress management, and trauma work. She is particularly interested in viewing each person in a holistic way, considering culture, values, and other individual differences.

Jason utilizes multiple theoretical approaches including interpersonal, cognitive-behavioral, Gestalt, and psychodynamic theories. His orientation is chosen by closely considering the client's presentation, personality, and interaction style.

Professional Interests:
Jason's clinical experience has included positions in college counseling centers, private practice, community mental health organizations, and adult correctional facilities. Current specific interests include depression, anxiety, abuse/trauma, relational and interpersonal concerns.



Bryn Higgins, Psy.D.

Bryn's work is integrative, approaching therapy from Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Client Centered Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy.

Professional Interests:
Bryn received her doctorate degree in clinical psychology from the University of Indianapolis in 2011. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Texas at Arlington and Sante Center for Healing Consortium. She has been trained as a generalist and has experiences working with a variety of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, developmental concerns, addiction, health related issues and pain management.



Nicole Mihalek, Psy.D.

Theoretical Orientation:
Nicole takes an integrative approach, including perspectives and techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, interpersonal and client centered therapies.

Professional Interests:
Nicole received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Indianapolis in 2011 and has had diverse training experiences working with college students, veterans and individuals experiencing chronic pain. She has worked with clients experiencing a range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, eating disorders, and issues related to stress management.
