At Risk
Want to Learn More about Identifying and Referring Students in Mental Distress?
What is At-Risk?
At-Risk is a web-based training simulation to assist faculty and staff in identifying, approaching, and refering students experiencing psychological distress.
Simulations include "conversations" with "students" to determine if and how to refer them to the counseling center.
Early detection of at-risk students can assist in improving academic performance and retention rates.
At-risk is part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Best Practices Registry.
What will I learn?
After completing the training, you will be better equipped to:
- Identify warning signs of mental distress, including verbal, behavioral, and situational clues
- Manage conversations with students to determine the need for referral
- Develop awareness of negative stereotypes and misconceptions about mental illness
- Communicate with CAPS and other IUPUI resources and incorporate contact information, locations, and referral policy into your conversations with students
