Establishing Services

Steps to establishing services:

  1. Stop by our office, Walker Plaza, 2nd floor, between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.
  2. Complete a brief series of online forms (~ 30 minutes, only accessible at CAPS' Office).
  3. Schedule an initial appointment with a CAPS' counselor. Initial appointments are typically scheduled within a week of your initial request; however, during times of high demand, the wait may be longer.
  4. Following the initial appointment you will be assigned a counselor who will contact you to set up your next appointment.

Same day crisis appointments will be arranged for students experiencing:

  • Suicidal thoughts;
  • Having difficulty completing typical daily tasks; and/or
  • Facing an acute stressor that threatens the safety of self or others.

All services must be established by contacting the front office.

Temporary Change in CAPS Services

Due to the high number of requests for services and unanticipated staffing changes, IUPUI CAPS will be making temporary changes in our service provision.

We will not be establishing ongoing individual counseling services with new clients until at least mid-summer and will not accept new couples counseling clients until fall semester.

  • We will complete all previously scheduled individual intakes, and continue to schedule such appointments in cases where needs are not imminent crises.
  • The purpose of the intake session will be to assess concerns and identify appropriate resources. CAPS' staff will identify the most appropriate level of care, which may include:
    • Referral to community providers
    • Referral to CAPS' group counseling options including CAPS skills group. Click here.
    • Placement on the wait-list for CAPS individual counseling services
    • Recommendation for CAPS skills workshop. See Schedule of Workshops below.
    • Referral to other campus resources

We will continue to provide crisis interventions to students in emergency situations.

  • Emergencies are defined as: persistent suicidal thoughts, difficulty completing typical daily tasks, and/or facing an acute stressor that threatens the safety of self or others.
  • Sessions will focus on assessment of risk, safety planning, and determination of need for ongoing care.
  • Follow-up sessions will focus on referral to community resources.

We will continue to provide uninterrupted services to our established clients.

Psychoeducational evaluations and testing will be provided.

  • There is currently a 6-8 week wait for initial appointments.
  • Completion time for such evaluations is typically 4-6 weeks after the initial evaluation session.

In order to facilitate referrals, we have developed a list of campus resources particularly relevant to end of semester concerns. This list also includes, the most accessible community mental health providers.

To meet some of the acute needs related to end of semester stressors, CAPS will be offering single-session workshops at the following dates and times. All sessions are facilitated by CAPS' staff and held in the CAPS Conference Room, Walker Plaza #201A
