IUPUI CAPS is supported by a small portion of the currently assessed general services student fees. In the absence of a general health fee, the following charges are applied to CAPS services:
CAPS accepts payment by cash, check, credit card, and optional billing through student account (Bursar).
Only students granted enrollment to IUPUI are eligible for CAPS' services. Students who have been admitted to the university may initiate counseling services prior to the first day of classes by providing documentation of registration for classes in the upcoming semester. There will be no distinction in service provision based on credit hour enrollment.
Graduate and professional students will be eligible for CAPS' services. Medical students will be made aware of Medical Student and Resident Counseling: Suzanne Kunkle, PhD, HSPP (278-4750) as an alternative resource. Medical residents and postdoctoral fellows are not eligible for CAPS' services, as they are considered employees of the University and will be referred to the EAP. Dental fellows and residents are considered students, and therefore, are eligible for CAPS' services.
Students who are not enrolled in summer classes, or are taking a leave from the university for no more than one semester remain eligible for CAPS' services.
All new clients will be assessed a $15 fee upon request for services at IUPUI CAPS. Initial Fees are not subject to sliding scale reductions, but may be paid over time.
Clients returning from a break in services will be assessed a $15 reactivation fee. This fee will be assessed at any time a new intake evaluation is required to re-establish services. New intakes must be performed when the client has not been seen for services within the past 4 months and when a new counselor must be assigned. Direct transfer of a client from one counselor to another will not require a new intake or fee assessment. Reactivation Fees are not subject to sliding scale reductions. When a client is returning to a prior counseling relationship, the counselor is responsible for clarifying Reactivation/Session fees and session coding with the client and Front Office Staff.
There will be no charge for initial Intake sessions for individual or relationship counseling.
Each student is eligible for 6 free individual counseling sessions during their career at IUPUI. Intake and assessment sessions are not counted as part of these free sessions. Subsequent to utilization of 6 individual counseling sessions, a fee of $10 will be assessed for each 50-minute session. In cases where this charge is prohibitive, fee adjustments may be made pending verification of income and in accordance with a standardized scale as determined by the Director. A prorated fee may be assessed when shorter sessions are indicated for therapeutic purposes, but not to compensate for client lateness.
Students and alumni who are engaged in individual counseling, but unable to pay the individual fee for counseling sessions will be eligible for a fee reduction upon providing verification of income through an income tax or financial aid form.
Relationship intake sessions will be performed free of charge. All sessions following intake are subject to a fee. Relationship counseling sessions are also typically 50-minutes length, but may be increased to 80-minutes based on the discretion of the counselor. A fee of $15 per person will be assessed for each session, for a total charge of $30 per session. Relationship counseling session fees are not subject to sliding scale reductions or free session allotments.
Screening/Intakes for group participation will be performed at no charge. During the 2011-12 academic year, there will be no charge for group counseling sessions. Group sessions will be 50-90 minutes in length, depending on the nature of the group.
Psychoeducational seminars will be provided at no cost.
Psychoeducational evaluation and testing will be provided for IUPUI students based on the eligibility requirements described above. The initial Evaluation interview will be performed free of charge. Fees for testing will be based on a standard schedule and are not subject to fee reductions. Students with financial need may seek funding for testing services through their academic unit, or may apply for a fee supplement through CAPS as funds are available (procedures are under development).
Psychiatric services are provided at IUPUI CAPS through contract with an independent psychiatrist. Fees for psychiatric services include $55 for initial intake session and $40 for medication management appointments. These fees are greatly discounted compared to community based providers due to allotments from the General Services Fee. Fees for Psychiatric Services are not subject to fee reductions and payment is due at the time of services.
Due to the high demand and limited availability of psychiatric services at CAPS, beginning in the fall of 2011, students will be charged for missed appointments. Students will be charged full fees for missed appointments not cancelled at least 24-hours in advance. Fees not paid within 30-days will be billed to the student's University (bursar) account. Multiple missed appointments may result in termination of services. Fees for missed appointments may be appealed in writing, with appeals submitted to the Director for review and approval or denial.
In order to facilitate continuity of care, if therapeutically indicated, CAPS will continue to provide counseling services to graduating/former students that have established services for a period of time while enrolled at IUPUI. For three months following dissociation from IUPUI, former students will be charged at the same rate as enrolled students. After three months, former students will be charged $35 per individual counseling session, $100 per relationship counseling session, and $10 per group session. In cases where individual counseling charges are prohibitive, fee adjustments may be made pending verification of income and in accordance with a standardized scale. Relationship counseling session fees are not subject to reductions. Within one year following last enrollment at IUPUI, clients will be assisted in securing other treatment options. Proposed exceptions to this one year limit must be submitted to the Director and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Non-students will be seen for crisis, stabilization, and referral only. Faculty, staff, and campus visitors will not be charged for such services.
Non-student employees of IUPUI may contact the Employee Assistance Program for counseling and mental health services.
