Individual Counseling
Many issues are addressed through one-on-one meetings with an individual counselor. Such issues may include stress management, feelings of sadness, difficulty with transitions, time management, and managing symptoms of depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns.
After completing the initial paperwork, you will be scheduled for an initial intake interview. During this meeting, you will be asked to describe why you are seeking services. Questions about your current life situation and background will be asked in order to understand the unique aspects of your situation. You will then be assigned a counselor to work with on an on-going basis, based on your particular concern.
Counseling sessions are typically 50 minutes in length and are often initially scheduled on a weekly basis. However, session frequency may be adjusted to meet the needs of the individual. During the first few sessions, you and your counselor will discuss the things you would like to see improve as a result of coming to CAPS. Your counselor will then work with you to reach those goals. CAPS implements a short-term treatment approach and service extensions will be regularly reviewed.
IUPUI students are eligible for 6-free individual counseling sessions, after which a $10.00 fee will be assessed per session. Applications for individual counseling session fee adjustments will be considered based on financial need.
IUPUI CAPS reserves the right to refer individuals to other mental health care providers for concerns that are beyond the scope of practice at this facility.
