What We Do

Information Resources
CCL Connections Newsletter

Campus involvement is directly related to academic success. However, in a busy world it may be hard to find opportunities for active participation. Each week we create the CCL Connections Newsletter which outlines events, programs, and opportunities to get involved on campus and in the community.

Web

We keep a constantly updated blog of interesting campus and community news on our home page. If you’d like to get your organization’s event information or message to first year students via our communication channels contact fyp@iupui.edu.

E-mail

Each month our office produces the GET INVOLVED email newsletter which reaches over 2,000 first year students. If you have interesting, engaging, and first year specific programming coming up please contact our office. You can click here to sign up for the GET INVOLVED list.

First Year Seminar Presentations

Our staff offers active presentations on Diversity, Student Involvement, Online Social Networking, & Teambuilding. These presentations supplement the First Year Seminar courses, which each first year student takes. We can also work with instructors and leaders on creating engaging curricular and co-curricular activities for classes and organizations. Please contact fyp@iupui.edu for more information and/or scheduling.

For First Year Seminar courses we recommend the Student Involvement presentation early in the semester and a follow-up Diversity presentation later on in the semester once students have become more familiar with campus and their classmates.

A current list of some activities includes:

  • Diversity
    • Unequal Resources: A creative small group activity that addresses privilege and individual backgrounds
    • Crossing the Line: Participants self identify with specific personal attributes (race, religion, politics, favorite music, etc...) in order to illustrate the differences that we all bring to the collegiate environment
    • Privilege Line-up: Exposes privilege spatially, leading to a discussion of cultural trends regarding privilege (requires large space, i.e. UC Courtyard)
    • Up-Down: A living "survey" of students which leads to a discussion on self identity
    • Customized Activities: We can tailor activities to fit with course/organization goals and timeframes
  • Student Involvement
    • Get Involved Now: Introduces students to the many events, organizations, and programs that IUPUI has to offer
    • Involvement Tour: Take a tour of campus departments and resources that make IMPACT at IUPUI. (Special arrangements may be needed)
  • Teambuilding
    • Customized Activities: We can work with instructional teams and groups to create an interactive and fun environment to build team-spirit and collaboration
    • Political Engagement: New in 2008! First Year Programs is developing an active module that will challenge students to think about their civic service and what it means to be an engaged citizen.
WOW Weeks of Welcome
WoW (Weeks of Welcome)

The first few weeks of school can be exciting and stressful. WoW is intended to help relieve stress while helping new students navigate campus, meet new people, and learn about opportunities and services on campus. Most WoW events are FREE! Check out the WoW website for more information on the events as well as a schedule.

FYS Mentor Resources

We love First Year Seminar mentors and recognize that many times mentors are called upon to be experts about campus life. We have the knowledge and resources to help FYS mentors get solid and pertinent information to first year students. We can even teach mentors how to facilitate icebreakers, team building exercises, and motivating activities that can have a fun impact on any FYS classroom. Contact fyp@iupui.edu to set up a time to meet.

University College Student Council
UCSC (University College Student Council)

Our office advises UCSC, which is a student organization made up of first year students. UCSC’s main goals are to help first year students have fun and become involved at IUPUI. Check out UCSC’s website for more information on how to get involved.

Jag Corps
Jag Corps

Each year FYP hires a group of students to help with summer orientation sessions and Weeks of Welcome. This small but mighty group of students is called Jag Corps and can be an easy way to get involved on campus. Each spring and summer we recruit for Jag Corps through the Career Center on JagJobs. Contact fyp@iupui.edu for more information.

Family

The transition to college life can be difficult for students as well as their loved ones. IUPUI recognizes that family is a very important part of a new student’s adjustment and that you have worked hard to help your student get prepared for college.

IUPUI is Indiana's premier urban research university. The campus enrolls more than 30,000 students in 21 schools and academic units.
