Volunteer & Service Opportunities

Did you know that IUPUI is nationally recognized for our commitment to community involvement? Students who volunteer gain valuable skills, make new friends, and are more marketable to employers. As one of the best campuses in the country to be involved in community service, service learning, and civic engagement, there are numerous ways for students, faculty and staff to get connected our community.

Center for Service & Learning

The mission of the Center for Service and Learning (CSL) is to involve students, faculty, and staff in service activities that mutually benefit the campus and community.

Office of Community Service

The Office of Community Service (OCS) serves to support and connect students, faculty and staff with volunteer projects in the Indianapolis community. Students, faculty and staff are urged to contact our office for assistance in finding, planning or funding an educationally meaningful community service project.

Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service

Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service celebrates a 'day on instead of a day off' through volunteers attending an inspirational breakfast program and then going out to serve others in the community.

César Chávez Day of Service

At the César Chávez Day of Service, IUPUI students and members of the Indianapolis community will participate in educational events and service projects to raise awareness about César Chávez and his impact.

Global Youth Service Day

Come join the Sam H. Jones Service Scholarship students as we work to educate George Washington Community School students about the environment for Global Youth Service Day.

Day of Caring

The Day of Caring is an annual community service day for IUPUI faculty, staff, and students.

Jaguars in the Streets

Designed to expose the IUPUI community to Indy and Indy to the IUPUI community, each month the Jaguars in the Streets program educates volunteers on a different social issue through volunteering and civic engagement. Come get involved on and off campus with other students, staff and faculty. Look for our 2-4 events per month! Pre-registration is required. Check our website http://www.iupui.edu/outreach/volunteer/ for more details. If you have any questions please contact Suzanne Graham at sezeller@iupui.edu.

To Mexico, With Love

This immersion program was initiated in the spring of 2004 by the Office of Campus & Community Life with strong support and leadership from the Office of International Affairs and Center for Service & Learning and in collaboration with the School of Nursing. Further collaborations are sought with the School of Education, Social Work, and other schools at IUPUI. This program is offered in partnership with a language and culture school, Ideal LatinoAmerica. The program is open to all majors, but student participants must meet a 2.7 minimum G.P.A. requirement. » Download application

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

One week prior to Thanksgiving, schools, communities and cities throughout the nation endeavor to bring a greater awareness to the issues of hunger and homelessness.

Thank You IUPUI Volunteers!

This academic year, over 1,532 other volunteers have provided over 13,070 hours of community service on the IUPUI campus and beyond! You helped make over 25 service events a SUCCESS, as you volunteered for local nonprofits such as Damar Services, Rebuilding the Wall, White River State Park and Exodus Refugee Immigration. According to the value of your service, you provided about $264,702.94 worth of important work!

Here's a snapshot of the amazing things IUPUI Volunteers have accomplished in 2008-2009 through the Office of Community Service:

  • 181 IUPUI volunteers participated in community service through their learning communities.
  • 1037 IUPUI volunteers participated in at least one large scale service event such as the IUPUI Day of Caring, The Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service, Senator Bayh Leadership Summit, Service and the City, Global Youth Service Day, Color Your City, and the Cesar Chavez Day of Service.
  • 50 IUPUI volunteers participated in our Alternative Breaks experiences to places such as Cincinnati, OH; Atlanta, GA; Soddy-Daisy, TN; Kansas City, MO; and Eustis, FL, and served in causes related to children, poverty, the environment, hunger, homelessness, and disability awareness.
  • 159 IUPUI volunteers participated in Jaguars in the Streets, volunteering their time with local agencies dedicated to Indiana’s senior citizens, environment, youth, poverty, and other important issues.

To all who have volunteered their time and effort this year in serving IUPUI and the community, "Thank You!"

It's true that "Volunteers are seldom paid; not because they are worthless, but because they are PRICELESS!" Although IUPUI and your community can't repay you for all your service, the Office of Community Service (OCS) wants to celebrate "Volunteer Recognition Week." You are APPRECIATED, and you have made an IMPACT here at IUPUI and in the Greater Indianapolis Area! We have a FREE little token of our appreciation for you in the OCS (CE375) located in Campus and Community Life in the Campus Center. Stop by sometime this week between the hours of 8am - 5pm! Details are on our blog. Thanks again for all you have done!
