For emergencies, call the IUPUI Police Department at 911 from any campus phone, or (317) 274-7911 from an off campus phone or your mobile phone. You can also dial 911 from a cellular or non-university phone to report emergencies to local emergency management.

What if there is a family emergency and I need to get a hold of my student?

Are there designated shelter locations on campus in case of a natural disaster/terrorism situation?

Yes, there are a variety of shelter locations on campus. Residents are instructed on emergency procedures via meetings, newsletters and drills.

Safety

All external entrances to the Campus Apartment buildings are controlled through an electronic card access system. Entrances to Ball Hall are locked and accessible through an electronic card access system between 5:30 pm – 8:00 am. In addition, Ball Hall is equipped with 24-hour video surveillance. The Campus Apartments and Ball Hall are equipped with exterior telephones to allow visitors to contact residents inside the building. When contacted, it is the responsibility of the resident to go to the front door of the residence hall to greet and provide access for guests.

After dark, residents should walk with at least one other person or if possible, in a group. Walk in well-lit areas. IUPUI offers an escort service for transportation between buildings on the main campus. Call the campus operator "0" Monday through Friday 6:00pm to 2:00am and on the weekends, call (317) 274-7971.

If you suspect any criminal activity or see suspicious behavior, call the IUPUI Police Department immediately at (317) 274-7971 and/or contact your RA as soon as possible.

Lock Out

If you are locked out during business hours, you may borrow a duplicate key and/or building access card from the housing office at no charge for the first time only. The key/card must be returned within 30 minutes. Subsequent lock outs will result in a $10.00 lock-out charge per incident. Business hours for the Office of Housing and Residence Life are Monday—Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. If lock outs occur after business hours, you will need to contact the RA on duty for assistance.
