Living Your Freshman Experience (LYFE) House

Purpose

The Living Your Freshman Experience (LYFE) was designed for all first year residents living in Ball Hall to become successfully engaged in their academic and social community.

Mission

The LYFE program will positively impact student success by providing programs and services intentionally designed to meet the unique academic needs of first-year residential students.

The LYFE program helps first year residents to be successful students by providing opportunities to develop in areas such as: academics, self-awareness, community involvement, and major and career exploration.

Goals

  1. Provide programs and services that lead to the development of practical competence.
    • Providing workshops on test-taking, note taking, study skills, etc.
    • Learning how to navigate registration system
    • Learning where campus resources can be found
    • Developing relationship skills: conflict management, student/teacher relationships, basic interpersonal skills
    • Get involved with LYFE Loot program
    • Participating in the LYFE Scholars program
  2. Foster academic success through increased strategic campus and community partnerships.
    • Creating stronger connection with Bepko Learning Center
    • Invite faculty to dinner (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner series)
    • Increase knowledge of CAPS, OSI, Student Health Center, Bepko Learning Center, Math Assistance Center, and Chemistry Resource Center
    • Awareness of free campus resources
  3. Encourage exploration in learning about personal identity development and major/career selection.
    • Workshops provided by Academic and Career Development office (MBTI, E-Discover, Bookbag to Briefcase Series, etc.)
    • Building relationships with other residents
    • Creating business tools (resumes, cover letters, job search tips, etc.)

LYFE Leaders will help facilitate the completion of these goals by:

  • Implementing two passive programs per month
    • Bulletin boards
    • Fliers, emails, Facebook posts, etc.
  • Work with floor RAs to encourage more academic-focused programs
  • Work as a team to put on monthly LYFE Workshop programs
  • Assist with and plan one Guess Who's Coming To Dinner per month
  • Conduct weekly study tables
  • Utilize various mediums to communicate and engage residents
    • Oncourse Group (LYFE Scholars)
    • Message board
    • Bulletin board
  • Support Weeks of Welcome and all OSI programs
  • Disseminate information on and encourage participation in academic workshops and appropriate campus sponsored activities
