Democracy Plaza

The Chalkboards on Campus! (And so much more...)

When walking on campus, many passersby may wonder about the chalkboard structure that is located under the Business/SPEA building breezeway.

Democracy Plaza (DP) is both the chalkboard structure and an active student organization. The DP structure consists of 3 large chalkboard structures on which the DP student organization posts weekly thought-provoking questions regarding local, national and global issues. Visitors to the boards can respond to the questions using the chalk provided and questions are changed weekly to reflect current topics. The area enclosed by the DP chalkboards is using as a programming space and hosts a diversity of events that are organized by both the DP student organization and other campus groups.

History of Democracy Plaza

The Democracy Plaza at IUPUI was created with the purpose of providing students, faculty, and staff with an opportunity to express, speak, and hear diverging thoughts surrounding social, political, economic, and religious issues relevant to the campus, city, state, country, and world. The project was started in the summer of 2004 when a group of students, faculty, and staff at IUPUI worked together to address the benefits and drawbacks of a physical structure outside of the traditional walls of academia that would seek to host a common area for students, faculty, and staff across the array of disciplines.
