Collegiate Readership Program (CRP)

Through the Collegiate Readership Program, The New York Times and USA Today are delivered around campus on weekdays, free of charge!

Fast Facts About the CRP

  • Delivered from August 23 – December 10 for the fall 2010 semester
  • Delivered January 10 – April 29 for the spring 2010 semester
  • The CRP was created by the President of Penn State University in 1997. Over 500 campuses nationally participate in the Collegiate Readership Program, including Indiana University-Bloomington and Notre Dame.
  • The CRP supports IUPUI's civic engagement mission. First Year Students are encouraged to utilize the free newspapers to raise awareness of national and international issues so that they can serve as active citizens in our community.
  • The CRP is funded by student activity fees, and about 1,000 papers are distributed around campus each day.
  • The CRP also offers a variety of online resources, sponsorship opportunities, and faculty benefits. Online resources can be accessed at www.usatodaycollege.com and www.nytimes.com/college. To discuss co-sponsorship opportunities, contact Sandy Flowers.

How can the CRP benefit faculty members?

There are a variety of online resources available for faculty members to utilize in their courses, which can be accessed at www.usatodaycollege.com and www.nytimes.com/college. Case studies with guiding questions and sample syllabi from faculty across the country are some examples of available resources.

Faculty members who utilize either of the newspapers in their courses can receive a free home or office subscription to aid in their course development. Either USA Today or the New York Times must be mentioned in the course syllabus to receive this benefit. Syllabi can be sent to Sandy Flowers, who will contact the CRP newspaper liaisons.

What programming is supported by the CRP?

  • The CRP offers sponsorship opportunities for faculty, staff or students who are interested in coordinating newspaper-related events. Some funding can be accessed to sponsor events monetarily, such as a roundtable or facilitated discussion. There are a limited amount of free at-home New York Times subscriptions for facilitators of related events. Free additional newspapers can be made available at related events.
  • In Spring 2008, the CRP and the IUPUI Political Engagement Project are running a letter to the editor contest. Students who have a public policy-related letter published in either of the newspapers will receive $100.
  • The CRP is also sponsoring a World News Challenge. Teams of students will answer Jeopardy-style trivia questions, based on information taken from the newspapers in a set two-week period. Teams can win up to $200. Who can I contact for more information?

Sandy Flowers, Coordinator of Academic Engagement for the Office of Student Involvement, serves as the campus liaison for the IUPUI CRP program. She can be reached at saflower@iupui.edu or (317) 274-3931.
