Volunteer & Service Events

Please join us for our community service events throughout the year! The Community Service staff sponsored 43 events in the 2009-2010 academic year, engaging over 2,614 students, faculty, staff and community members in 33,274 hours of service to over 150 community partners. Participation numbers show a 60% increase from 2008-2009.

Fall Semester

Jaguars in the Streets

Designed to expose the IUPUI community to Indy and Indy to the IUPUI community, each month the Jaguars in the Streets program educates volunteers on a different social issue through volunteering and civic engagement. Come get involved on and off campus with other students, staff and faculty. Look for our 2-4 events per month! Pre-registration is required. Service and the City

During the Weeks of Welcome, join us for a day-long community service experience, complete with a guided bus tour of Indianapolis, lunch with community leaders, and hands-on community service at a local non-profit agency. This opportunity is ideal for first year students and those who are new to Indianapolis/IUPUI, as well as those who are interested in civic leadership. Lunch and t-shirt are provided. Day of Caring

The Day of Caring is an annual community service day for IUPUI faculty, staff, and students. This event is done in conjunction with the United Way's Campaign for Day of Caring. Day of Caring is held on September 16, 2011 from 8:00 am–1:00 pm. Pre-registration is required. Please click the link above for more information.

Fall Alternative Break

IUPUI Fall Alternative Break (FAB) is a low-cost service trip that takes IUPUI students to communities outside of Indianapolis, where they take part in volunteering and hands-on learning. Students perform short-term projects for community agencies and learn about issues such as health, literacy, poverty, racism, hunger, homelessness and the environment. SOLE Conference

Please join us for the first ever Service Oriented Leadership Expo, a conference designed to bring together members of various student organizations to focus on issues in the community such as sustainability as well as leaving behind your own footprint. Come listen to dynamic and interesting community partners and speakers in the morning and enjoy an afternoon of service to the community in the afternoon. Make a Difference Day

IUPUI volunteers spend National Make a Difference Day making a commitment to actively participate in this special day of volunteerism. Make a Difference Day was initiated in 1990 and is annually held on the last Saturday in October. Even small efforts can make a big difference. Pre-registration is required. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

One week prior to Thanksgiving, schools, communities and cities throughout the nation endeavor to bring a greater awareness to the issues of hunger and homelessness. World AIDS Day

Spring Semester

Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service

The Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service celebrates a 'day on instead of a day off' through volunteers attending an inspirational breakfast program and then going out to serve others in the community. This event held in January falls each year on the Monday of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Information for this event in 2012 will be coming soon.

César Chávez Day of Service

At the César Chávez Day of Service, IUPUI students and members of the Indianapolis community will participate in educational events and service projects to raise awareness about César Chávez and his impact. César Chávez Day is held on the last weekend in March and is planned by the Sam H. Jones Community Service Scholars.

Alternative Spring Break

These trips send students to other cities and states to engage in daily volunteer projects and social issue awareness. Through service, participants are able to experience, discuss, and understand social issues while learning how to become active citizens in their own communities.

Global Youth Service Day

Come join the Sam H. Jones Service Scholarship students as they volunteer side by side with George Washington Community School students and provide education about the environment and the importance of service to your community for Global Youth Service Day in April.
