IUPUI is Indiana's premier urban research university. The campus enrolls more than 30,000 students in 21 schools and academic units.
The overall mission of the Behavioral Consultation Team (BCT) is to coordinate the resources of the IUPUI community in order to help our students maintain satisfactory academic progress and function successfully within the campus environment.
The purpose of the BCT is to assist faculty, staff, administrators, and students in addressing instances of behavior, which may not be appropriate for the IUPUI campus environment. Examples of such instances include, but are not limited to: behavior that appears to be dangerous or threatening to oneself or others; bizarre or strange behavior such as acting "out of touch" with reality; angry, hostile, or abusive behavior; or other behavior that is inappropriate, worrisome, or disruptive. In some cases, there may be no violation of campus rules, as such, but the behavior may evoke alarm or concern among involved persons.
The BCT responds on a case-by-case basis through proactive and educational activities which includes consultations on policies and procedures. The following is an illustrative (i.e., not exhaustive) list of possible outcomes that may result from the consultation process. The BCT may recommend that no action be taken; the BCT may assist faculty or staff in developing a plan of action for dealing with a student, including formulating specific behavioral expectations for a student, if appropriate. The BCT may facilitate referral to appropriate campus or community resources. The BCT may recommend that a student take a leave of absence. The BCT may recommend that a case be referred to the Office of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Conduct for disciplinary proceedings in order to deal with disruptive behavioral issues.
Individuals wishing to contact the BCT may do so through the Office of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct at http://rights.iupui.edu or any of its members. Once the appropriateness of utilizing the BCT process has been determined through this initial contact, the BCT will make every effort to respond to those requesting assistance in a timely manner.
Members of the Behavioral Consultation Team meet regularly, as well as, in response to requests for assistance. Depending on the particular situation, other representatives (e.g., an associate dean or faculty member, etc.) may be asked to join the Team on an ad hoc basis. In addition, the Chancellor, Dean of Faculties, and the Vice Chancellor for Student Life are available to consult with the team as necessary.
